Bank Note Place and Engravers Lofts – 1910 S. Indiana (118 Units)
This South Loop loft residence is an award-winning conversion of the American Bank Note Company’s historic redbrick building. The five-story, turn-of-the-century structure was beautifully renovated into 118 loft-style units with a 9,000 square-foot courtyard designed by a renowned landscape architect.
Earnest Wong is the mastermind behind the Bank Note Place and Engravers Lofts’ sprawling botanical paradise. The gardens are sprinkled with bamboo stalks, river birch trees, and several varieties of lush plant life. There are walkways and intimate seating areas, plus barbeque grills and patio tables. The center of attention is a contemporary garden fountain with built-in benches. It sprays water from multiple in-ground jets that bubble up from concrete squares.
The lobby entrance to the lofts is said to be in the original bank vault from when the American Bank Note Co. occupied the building starting in 1902. It is equipped with video entry from the street, which residents can access for guests and deliveries. The rest of the structure was completely remodeled into modern loft-style homes. Open floor plans, high ceilings, exposed ductwork, and divider walls give these revamped residences a distinctly loft-like feel. Galvanized steel ceilings are a unique feature that is not often found in Chicago loft conversions. The shiny metal surfaces are a sleek design element that also reflects light to brighten rooms.
Units in the Bank Note Place and Engravers Lofts generally have exposed ductwork around the ceilings, thermal insulated floor-to-ceiling windows, and private balconies or patios (depending on which floor it’s on). Finishes you might expect to see include oak hardwood flooring, upgraded kitchens that overlook the living/dining area, and specialty track and cove lighting. Cable TV and Internet are included in monthly assessments. There are washer/dryer hook-ups in the individual units and deeded garage parking is available in the building.
A number of CTA bus stops are directly around the corner from the Bank Note Place and Engravers Lofts. For motorists, Lake Shore Drive and the Stevenson Expressway (I-55) are also close by.
