Acorn Lofts – 1017 W. Washington (49 Units)
The traditional timber and brick construction of this 1902 industrial building makes the Acorn Lofts a real estate gem. The original warehouse structure was converted into 49 totally unique residential units. Every loft in the six-story building is different from the next. The Acorn Lofts’ true hard-loft design is one of only a handful left in the City of Chicago.
While the units all have distinctive layouts, each space upholds essential loft features. Exposed ducts, plumbing and track lighting wind about the soaring timber ceilings. Tall exterior brick walls rise to meet the lofty wood beams. Thick support pillars stand like trees in the central living area. Hardwood stretches across the sprawling floor. Kitchens are tucked into a corner of the open floor plan. Oversized multi-pane windows draw light into the mammoth boxy habitation. Some units have lofted second stories and large outdoor terraces. The entire building shares a rooftop sundeck where residents can relax on lounge chairs and enjoy unobstructed views of the city skyline to the east.
Other interior amenities include wood-burning fireplaces, high-end kitchen appliances, custom closets, built-in audio systems, in-unit laundry, luxurious bathrooms, and contemporary fixtures. Units range from 1,200 square-foot homes to 3,700+ square-foot live/work spaces. In authentic loft style, the residences can be reconfigured to accommodate various arrangements. But for the most part, the Acorn Lofts have at least one designated bedroom with privacy walls.
The Acorn Lofts are in Chicago’s industrial-chic West Loop neighborhood. A fitting locale for the classic masonry frame that only recently joined the city’s slew of manufacturing sites rehabbed for residential purposes. Acorn Lofts has its own garage with deeded indoor parking and additional spaces available outdoors. Fine restaurants in the notable dining districts of Little Italy and Greek Town are within walking distance, as is the campus of the University of Illinois at Chicago.
